In Dallas, District 2 joined with the Dallas Area Paralegal Association, the North Texas Paralegal Association and the J.L. Turner Association Paralegal Section to host their 12th Annual Texas Paralegal Day joint celebration at the Belo Mansion in Dallas.  This year’s theme was “Flying High in Your Profession” with Gary Kennedy, former general counsel for American Airlines.  Mr. Kennedy spoke on attributes that he looks for in paralegals and what he seeks in a successful legal team member. Michele Boerder read the Texas Senate Proclamation No. 1144, declaring every October 23rd Texas Paralegal Day.

The moderator was Tarrant County Bar Association President, Mike Henry, Esq. Mr. Henry read Proclamation No. 1144. The speaker was Bill Bowers, Esq. He gave a very insightful presentation on “Tips for Being an Ethical Paralegal.” Both were very complimentary of each other, the paralegal profession, and the program. District 5 joined the two local organizations, Alamo Area Paralegal Association and South Texas Organization of Paralegals, to put on the 11th Annual San Antonio Paralegal Day Celebration.  The president-elect of the State Bar, Allen DuBois, was our keynote and, in keeping with our theme, The Winds of Change, gave a great presentation about the evolution in the practice of law, and then discussed some of the initiatives he intends to pursue when he steps into office next May.

Due to the success of the event over the years, we were able to donate $1800 to the San Antonio Bar Association, Community Justice Program, which is the largest local pro bono program in the area.

Last, but not least, Sharon Vetters was awarded Paralegal of the Year.  Her attorney wrote a lovely letter of recommendation about the nature of their practice, spanning 30+ years.  It was a great day for District 5, and I wish all other paralegals a Happy Paralegal Day – today, tomorrow, and every day!

TIME TO BE THANKFUL

Posted by Texas Paralegal Division Blogger at blog@txpd.org on November 11, 2012

It’s Post Texas Paralegal Day and Pre Thanksgiving Day.  What better time to celebrate those that planned, hosted, contributed to and attended all of the Texas Paralegal Day celebrations around the State.  Colleagues around the state enjoyed various forms of celebration in their career with like-minded colleagues, supported lawyers and judges, and students of the profession.  Enjoy some of the photographs of those celebrations below until we celebrate again next year!

Thank you to our Paralegal Day Sponsors!

Posted by Texas Paralegal Division Blogger at blog@txpd.org on November 18, 2009

On October 23, 1981, the State Bar of Texas became the first bar association in the United States to create a separate division for paralegals. Recognizing the importance of paralegal professionals in the legal community, beginning in 2005, during each session, the Texas House of Representatives signed proclamations acknowledging October 23rd as “Paralegal Day” (in recognition of the anniversary of the founding of the Paralegal Division), for one or two years at a time. However on January 22, 2009, the Texas Senate issued Proclamation No. 1144, declaring October 23rd to be Texas Paralegal Day indefinitely.

Proclamation No. 1144 states, in part, that “Paralegals are vital resources to their firms, performing valuable services for and under the direction of an attorney, and their work requires a thorough knowledge of legal concepts and facts. October 23 marks the anniversary of the founding of the Paralegal Division of the State Bar of Texas, a division established to promote high standards of conduct, professional ethics, and responsibility through continuing legal education and cooperation with the State Bar of Texas. The goals of the Paralegal Division are to achieve more economical and improved legal services throughout the state, to focus on benefits for its members and the paralegal profession, and to develop opportunities, incentives, and recognition for legal education. Through their exceptional talents and expertise, paralegals provide valuable services that contribute significantly to the efficient functioning of the judicial system in the Lone Star State and they are indeed worthy of special recognition.

With sincere appreciation, the Paralegal Division of the State Bar of Texas would like to recognize the following firms for their support of the many Texas Paralegal Day celebrations held across the state:
