EXCEPTIONAL PRO BONO SERVICE AWARD

The Paralegal Division (PD) of the State Bar of Texas is proud to sponsor an Exceptional Pro Bono Service Award. Its purpose is to promote the awareness of pro bono activities and to encourage PD members to volunteer their time and specialty skills to pro bono projects within their community by recognizing a PD member who demonstrates exceptional dedication to pro bono service. Paralegals are invited to foster the development of pro bono projects, to provide assistance to established pro bono programs, and work closely with attorneys to provide unmet legal services to people with low incomes.

This annual award will go to an individual PD member who performed the pro bono service(s) in the State of Texas and has volunteered his or her time and special skills in providing uncompensated services in pro bono assistance to their community. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2013 Annual Meeting to be held in Dallas, TX on Friday, June 21, 2013, his/her expenses to attend the Annual Meeting will be incurred by the Division, and a profile of the individual will be published in the Fall 2013 issue of the Texas Paralegal Journal.

PD Member – Pro Bono Survey

The Paralegal Division is focusing on Pro Bono service this year and wanted to know how our members were involved with the communities where they live and work.  A recent survey of PD members showed that approximately 30% of the membership is involved in Pro Bono paralegal work and 70% of you do other types of volunteer work in your community. This is fantastic! We are glad to hear that so many people are giving back.

We collected suggestions for future Pro Bono projects – keep your eye on the Pro Bono listings at www.txpd.org for options in your area.

Not sure about where you might be able to volunteer? Go to txpd.org, click on Membership then Pro Bono Programs for a list of potential groups in your area which you can volunteer through.  If there are not any programs in your local area, send an email to probono@txpd.org to request assistance.

Paralegal Division presents the Exceptional Pro Bono Award

Lyla with award This is National Pro Bono week, and we are excited to announce that Lyla Malolepszy has won the Exceptional Pro Bono Award from the Paralegal Division of the State Bar of Texas.  Lyla works in Sherman, Texas and is being recognized for her ongoing pro bono efforts and involvement in her community.  Congratulations Lyla!
