It Has Been an Honor – Thank you!

Posted by Texas Paralegal Division Blogger at blog@txpd.org on June 22, 2017

As June 23rd approaches, our new Board of Directors will be inducted to start the new term at Annual Meeting! This will be my final message to you as President of the Paralegal Division.

This year has been full of exciting challenges and I hope you have been encouraged and challenged to try out some of the other benefits the Division offers.

To streamline the membership renewal process, this year, it is exclusively online so no bulky packets with blue envelopes are being mailed to you as a reminder.  Please renew today! (Visit www.txpd.org under the “Members Only” tab to complete your renewal application.  A late fee of $25.00 will apply to renewals submitted after July 1, 2017.)

With the TPJ being exclusively digital and reminders about membership renewals and other matters via e-blast, a large part of your Division benefits are delivered to you through your e-mail address.  Please keep your e-mail up-to-date and that “*@txpd.org” is added to your safe list to ensure your receipt.

One of the duties of the President is to serve as the Chair for TAPS the following fall.  This fall, it will be in Addison on October 4th – 6th.  We have an exciting program planned with a murder mystery social, dozens of our wonderful sponsors, and a variety of topics by local and not so local attorneys.  I hope to see you there!  (Visit: https://txpd.org/taps/default.asp)

One of the goals this past term was to promote the Division and to increase the role and utilization of the paralegal.  Please see my last “President’s Message” in the Summer 2017 TPJ about this year’s hard work of the Board of Directors and our incredible journey to work towards that goal. Thank you for being  a PD member!

Sincerely,

— Megan

In the late 1990s, Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez were tried and convicted of performing “satanic ritual abuse” on two young girls.  They were given lengthy prison sentences.  “Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four” is a documentary on their accusation, their trials and their struggle for justice and exoneration. The trailer for the movie can be found at http://www.southwestofsalem.com    This movie recently won a Peabody Award and the GLADD Media Award for Best Documentary, where Hollywood Stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Christian Slater and Debra Messing watched as the 4 women, now free, accepted the award.  Mike Ware began his fight for the San Antonio Four’s freedom in 2011 and he will take you through the fight to win justice for the San Antonio 4. Support for Victims of Canton, TX Tornadoes

prombarn

http://kxan.com/2017/04/30/tornado-destroys-canton-venue-hours-before-hs-prom/

As you have more than likely heard, the Canton area was devastated by tornadoes April 29, 2017.  If you are interested in helping that area via labor, donations or your time, here is some information:

The staging area is at the Canton Fairgrounds.  If you want to help in any way, please call  903-502-0151 and see how you can help.  There are all types of clean-up efforts going on, food service, and collection of necessary items.  The Mayor of Canton, Lou Ann Everett, emphasized to please call that number first as they are the “control booth” for all of the volunteer efforts.  They do not need water, food, or clothing donations because they have no space to store those items at the moment.

You may also access Mayor Everett’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/laeverett1.  There are updates being posted there which include:

  1. Canton/Van Zandt County Tornado relief fund for donations:  VZC Tornado Relief Fund, First State Bank, P. O. Box 428, Canton, Texas 75103.
  2. Facebook page for radio station KWJB 95.1 The Bee has information.
  3. Canton Animal Shelter for rescued animals:  903-567-4880 or 903-603-5024.

Please keep all of these folks in your thoughts and prayers, and if you feel you can help in any way, hopefully this information will give you some direction.
